Suzanne Coetzee amongst the Piekenierskloof Vineyards, home of Nuiba grapes
Nuiba is not just a word, and it’s not just a wine. Nuiba is a place which has very special meaning to its winemaker, Suzanne Coetzee. This love for her family farm in Namibia developed further into her passion for winemaking, resulting in a boutique range of wines, aptly known as the Four Post range. I have known Suzanne for some time as a winemaker, I have tasted her over the years, and somehow, she captures the very essence of the grapes she is using.Suzanne Coetzee holding one of her gems[/caption]
Suzanne sources some of her grapes from the Piekenierskloof Wine Appellation, known for its bush vines which grow in dryland conditions. These conditions result in small berries with high concentrations and unique flavour profiles. Her winemaking philosophy is to retain the primary grape flavours with minimal interference during the winemaking process. The grapes are fermented in open fermenters which allows for maximum punch downs, where after the wines are transferred to older barrels for malolactic fermentation and ageing.
The Nuiba 3rd Post 2016
The two wines I have tasted are the The Nuiba 3rd Post 2016 and The 4th Post 2017. The Nuiba 3rd Post 2016 is a Cape Blend made from 100% Piekenierskloof grapes. The Cape Blend requires at least 30% Pinotage, though Suzanne has chosen a blend of Pinotage (52%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Grenache (18%). The grapes were carefully sourced from Pinotage vineyards older than 35 years of age, with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from bush vines. The wine has an intense fruit driven character with notes of plums and cherries. The Cabernet Sauvignon’s tannins ensure beautiful ageing while the Grenache gives the wine finesse. The Pinotage adds its own red berry fruits and plums. This is a perfect food wine and needs a fully flavoured accompanying dish. Like my Bobotie – CLICK HERE.
The 4th Post 2017
The 4th Post 2017, is a Semillon Malbec blend. Unusual blend using the two Bordeaux varieties which make the perfect match for this unique Rosé-style wine. With grapes sourced from the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation, the wine was fermented in third fill barrels, giving it complexity and mouthfeel, yet still maintaining its fruity flavours as well as freshness to make it a perfect Summer Autumn wine. The prices start at R190 for the 1st Post, R190 for the 2nd Post, R285 for the 3rd Post and R115 for the 4th Post.
